WISDOM IN OUR COMMUNITY
WISDOM IN OUR COMMUNITY
This is Susan, Master Teaching Artist, creator of Family Story Kits, working on a mural with students and families in Newtown, CT, with Expressive Arts Therapy.
Susan E. Rosano, MA, is a Registered Expressive Arts Consultant, Educator and Therapist with a Masters Degree from Wesleyan University. Over the course of her Expressive Arts Therapy career, Susan has worked with many different populations including terminally ill patients and their families in a hospice program, seniors in nursing homes, assisted living centers and communities of senior centers, children and adults with disabilities and special healthcare needs and grieving children, adults and their communities. In 2021, Susan was awarded a Fellowship from the National Arts Strategies New England Creative Community Fellows. Through this fellowship, she created "Family Story Kits." The goal of these kits is to transform negative ideas about aging in our culture by documenting the personal histories of senior citizens through visual arts and storytelling. The kits are also for anyone of any age to record personal histories using visual art with stories.
“There is a very deep vein of wisdom in our communities,” Rosano said. “My goal is to transform negative ideas about aging in our culture into positive beliefs about the strength, wisdom and contributions of senior citizens to their communities by documenting their personal histories through visual arts and storytelling, then exhibiting the results at a public venue.”
For the past twenty-five years Susan has worked as a Master Teaching Artist, teaching visual arts projects on the juried rosters of the Vermont Arts Council, New Hampshire Arts in Healthcare, Arts for Learning Connecticut, and is a Creative Aging Teaching Artist in Vermont. She is also a past art professor at the Charter Oak State College in CT. Susan has worked with hospice patients and senior citizens to create legacy arts, such as short stories, poems and art work from their pasts.
We're surrounded by woods covered with ice in the winter. This is where Susan creates her expressive therapy projects as a Master Teaching Artist.
